There's something to do in Kentucky after all...

In today’s post, we look at one of the best names for a state park I’ve ever seen: Kentucky’s Big Bone Lick. I know, I know, a more mature adult would acknowledge that the name comes from the salty marsh there, and the fossilized bones of prehistoric animals that were found within, but honestly, I'm not that adult. I can’t help but think that this must be the infamous state park where one can find the notorious Glory Hole. (Go on, click that last link, you know you want to, and it's almost even work-safe...)

Further proof that I'm not making this up:

Big Bone Lick

Anyway, looking at the details of the undisputed “Birthplace of American Vertebrate Paleontology” (which sounds vaguely educational, and not nearly as lewd as I’d like), I see that they have a gift shop. Which says to me: Big Bone Lick t-shirts!!! I have no idea what they'd look like, but anyone who can acquire one for me will earn my undying gratitude.

Many thanks to Kristen for the picture. And kids, if you’re looking for more information on Big Bone Lick, please Google responsibly and enclose those search terms in quotes. I can’t be responsible for your safety if you don’t.

Self-Benching (general aches, pains, and strange crunching noises)

Grrr… I’d been doing reasonably well with playing in games, but I’ve benched myself for today. Kind of sucks to play goalie in that respect – we don’t have a lot of spares lying around, and don’t have back-ups for most games, so I have to decide well in advance (in this case, the night before) whether I’m going to be good to go for the entire game. Didn’t work out for me a couple of weeks ago when we played Columbia – lost a lot of the feeling in my arm, and ended up playing the last ten minutes of the game without a stick (those sticks can get seriously heavy towards the end of games). Ironically, I was a complete sieve with my stick, but they didn’t manage to score when I didn’t have one. Huh.

Anyway, good decision to not play, as this morning my shoulder is extremely achy, and makes a noise I haven’t heard it making before. A squishy crunching noise when I rotate it. Pretty gross. I'm pretty sure my team will be ok without me for today.

Haven’t put up a picture in a while, so I’ll throw one in today. This was taken outside a country store about a mile from my parents’ place:

Redneck Armory

At first I thought this was kind of nice, sort of like a redneck version of the guns-for-tickets or guns-for-food programs they’ve used in various places in an attempt to get guns off the streets. But then a thought occurred to me: these aren’t the kind of people who would be destroying guns. They’re way more likely to be stockpiling them. My suspicions were elevated when I visited home over Christmas, and noticed that the store was closed and boarded up. Apparently now there’s one more family in the Willamette Valley with a cache of weapons and no employment. Just what rural Oregon needs…
